C & H Masonry specialise in stone carving and restoration pieces. We have worked on a number of projects from high-end artwork to statues to memorial stones. We can create unique pieces of stone to your choice and specification. Pieces include an exact replica of Einstein’s brain, currently being exhibited at the Wellcome Trust Art Gallery and ‘The Slate Chair’, a limited edition commissioned by designer Rolf Sachs.

Einstein’s Brain – Created out of curiosity for one of sciences greatest brains. Carved from pure white marble, its dimensions replicate the abnormalities and differences his brain displayed. Currently displayed in the private collection at the Wellcome Trust.

The Slate Chair- Commissioned by Rolf Sachs this piece represents the iconic café chair. The original concept was that the chair would be made from a single block of marble but it was decided that Cumbrian slate was more appropriate because the marble legs would be too fragile.  Each piece of the chair was individually made by hand then reassembled. It is an edition of five with one artists proof and has been exhibited in Basel, New York and London.

Stone Cross – This intricate piece involved challenging elements of stone carving and masonry. The piercing of the stone required great skill and craftsmanship. The results are a spectacular piece of stonework.

The Lion’s Head – This piece is one of two made to date, the second incorporates a basin and water chute. To ensure originality and realism, lions were observed and photographed at a safari park and used for resource material.

The Labyrinth – Labyrinth’s are shrouded in mystery and hold religious and pagan meanings. This sculpture was carved in white limestone and has the flower of life motif in the centre.

St Bernadette – This statue of St Bernadette was recreated after vandals destroyed the original, including stealing her head. The end piece was achieved through studying old photographs and the remains of what was left, whilst keeping the carving in the style of the original carved in the 1950’s. It is currently in situ at a Bristol school.

Memorial stone - We will take a sympathetic and respectful approach to any memorial stone. We really want to honour your loved lost ones by creating a unique piece of stone work that will serve as a lasting tribute to their lives. This one used a traditional early English style with a flower motif and a slate insert.
